Literature Matters began with a simple belief: every child deserves access to books that inspire, empower, and reflect the world around them.

Founded in 2021 by a professor, author, and literacy advocate Dr. J. Desiree Rodriguez, Literature Matters was created to bridge literacy gaps by connecting children and families with diverse books, authors, and educational experiences. What started as a small community literacy event has grown into a movement dedicated to promoting literacy, representation, and lifelong learning throughout San Antonio and beyond.

2021

The Beginning

Literature Matters hosts its very first literacy festival in Ruskin, FL at the Ruskin Cultural Center.

With a vision, a handful of authors, community support, and a passion for literacy, our inaugural event welcomed families together to celebrate reading and diverse storytelling.

2022 - 2023

Growth Through Storm & Building Momentum

As community increased, so did Hurricane Ian. Literature Matter had to pivot and host a month later. We expanded our programming and continued bringing diverse authors, small business collaborations, and literacy experiences to local families.

Highlights:

2024

A Historic Milestone

Literature Matters officially became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

This milestone allowed the organization to expand its reach, pursue grant opportunities, and deepen its investment in literacy initiatives throughout the community.

2025

Expanding Our Reach

Literature Matters experienced one of its most impactful years to date.

Through literacy festivals, community partnerships, and book distributions initiatives, the organization significantly expanded access to diverse books and literacy experiences.
